A.M.C.H.A. Coalition for Jewish Concerns-Amcha

A.M.C.H.A.

Amcha is Hebrew for "the grassroots," the ordinary people. The Coalition for Jewish Concerns was founded in 1992 by Rabbi Avi Weiss to facilitate the active, peaceful expression of the feelings, aspirations and concerns of American Jews.

At the Coalition for Jewish Concerns-Amcha, when it comes to standing up for Israel...Jews in danger around the world...when Jewish identity of Jewish safety is at risk - we get involved.

Amcha speaks truth to power.

Amcha does not flinch from going to the point of tension.

Amcha's spiritual activism expresses love of the People of
Israel, Torah of Israel and Land of Israel.

Amcha awakens in Jews an exhilarating sense of Jewish consciousness,
Jewish identity and pride.

Amcha is devoted to encouraging and
strengthening Jewish identity
through activism.

We are not afraid to deal with unpopular issues, and we act in a meaningful, visible and dignified way. We're not afraid to take a tough stance on the issues - as long as our stance is right and just.

Amcha peacefully:

* Defends Israel's rights to safety and security: June 2001, CJC-AMCHA helped organize the rally in New York that brought over 10,000 people to the streets in support of Israel and again in December in a rally for America and Israel Against terrorism. On April 7th, 2002, 20,000 people came out with three days notice for the solidarity rally for Israel in front of the UN. The Washington DC rally where over 250,000 attended - was first announced at this April event. June 23rd, 2002 - Governor Pataki stood with thousands upon thousands in support of Israel at the Israeli Consulate in NYC.

* CJC-AMCHA brought four solidarity missions to Israel within a 9-month period in 2002.

* CJC-AMCHA has brought Israeli artists, shopkeepers and merchants into North America directly from Israel to attend Israeli vendor fairs all over. CJC-AMCHA has successfully coordinated over 50 such fairs in various communities across North America and has empowered Jewish communities in every state to coordinate these fairs on their own.

* Assists Jews in danger: LAST year CJC-AMCHA kept the issue of the imprisoned Iranian Jews on the communal agenda, 2,500 people stood with us in front of the Iranian mission to the UN to demand their freedom. This year it is anti-Semitism that is blatantly ignored throughout Europe.

Amcha Develops New Jewish Leadership:

Amcha leaders have created Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, a vibrant institute of higher Jewish learning where young rabbis are inculcated with the Amcha philosophy of spiritual activism.

Amcha leaders reach out to Jewish students on campuses all over America.

Amcha conducts training for Jewish community leaders across the country.
