Seniors and Special Friends

Senior Programs

The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale Older Adult Program reaches out to hundreds of senior citizens throughout the Bronx. We are open on Sundays when virtually no other programs are available to provide nutritious meals to many low-income individuals, transportation for the frail, educational and culturally enriching programs for the lonely and a telephone support line for the homebound.

We offer an opportunity for an afternoon of socialization while providing stimulating and entertaining events. Many seniors look to the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale as their home-away-from home, a place where they always feel welcome and are treated with dignity and respect. They share their wealth of experiences with each other and members of the community. We've become a vital link in the lives of so many seniors, a source of emotional and physical sustenance that enriches the lives of so many.

Special Friends Programs

The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale Special Friends Program provides social, rehabilitative programs to hundreds of individuals throughout the Bronx who are challenged (developmentally disabled). Over 40 group homes, as well as many individuals who reside at home, participate in this unique program that includes educational and culturally enriching programs that are both stimulating and therapeutic. We bring together members of the community with needy clients in a warm, receptive, and welcoming environment that fosters and enhances social growth and interaction.

Throughout the year, hundreds of Special Friends come together to share in events that may include holiday celebrations, jamborees, Model Seders, shows, and trips as well as various other exciting activities. At times, there are 200 Special Friends dancing together, full of excitement and enthusiasm. To see the smiles on the faces of so many and to share in their joy truly warms our hearts.
