"To listen, to learn and to teach"
The Jewish Youth Encounter Program (JYEP) is an exciting and innovative alternative to the traditional supplementary Hebrew School. The program is the brainchild of Rabbi Avi Weiss and is housed in the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale. While the traditional Hebrew School goals of instilling a love for, and attachment to Judaism remain, the methods that the JYEP employs for attaining these goals are very different. Our program, which spans the years from indergarten through twelfth grade, is unique in its approach. The JYEP is open to all Jewish students, regardless of Hebrew school background.

Looking Forward to Weekly Sessions:
Laughter, excitement and joy are the hallmarks of learning in a JYEP
session. Teachers work with a curriculum which covers the standard range
of Jewish knowledge and study creative learning techniques to relate to
the students. Art, music, and baking also enhance the JYEP experience.
Children do not perceive the JYEP as a burden.

Experiencing One on One Learning with the Big Sibling Program:

Every child beginning in the fourth or fifth grade is paired with a 'big sister'
or 'big brother.' These are people in the community who give of their time
and love to meet and learn with the JYEP students. It is here where Hebrew language and Bar or Bat Mitzvah instruction takes place.

Throughout the year, these 'siblings' form a close bond that often lasts for many years. Our Big Sibling Program meets weekly on Sunday mornings from 9:30am-10:30am. It is required for students in grades 4-7.

Involving the Family:
Parent Limud (learning) is a key element in the JYEP experience. Each Sunday the parents spend the first hour and a half with the children learning together. A special program is designed for the parents and children that reflects the class lesson plan of that day. Learning together gives the child the experience of Judaism intersecting with his or her family experience as well.

Experiencing the Religion, Not Only Educating About it:
Singing, dancing and feeling are integral parts of the educational program
at the JYEP. Sukkot, Yom Kippur, Chanukkah and Yom Hashoah are experienced through special services and family gatherings. Shabbat is celebrated through Shabbatons and family Shabbat dinners. These programs tend to be the most beautiful and memorable moments of the school year.

Shabbat Activities and Services:
Every Saturday morning, in addition to the inspiring services in the main
sanctuary, the HIR provides groups for children. Our special Shabbat Learning Services for teens and adults are held monthly. HIR families join together several times during the year for special Friday night dinners and activities as well.
